Today's task: Tell Ronan that two numbers you gave him on Tuesday are wrong, before he locks the page tonight, and hand him a version he can paste in without thinking.

The Setup

Where

A video call on Friday afternoon your time. Ronan is in Dublin, where it is still morning. His screen is shared: the paragraph about your tool sits in the middle of the page, with the rest of the issue already set around it. A cold cup of coffee stands next to his keyboard.

Who

You are Sam, and you build Echonote on your own — it turns long voice notes into structured notes. Ronan writes The Solo Stack, a paid weekly newsletter for indie developers. He is not your customer. He is recommending your tool because he tried it and liked it.

At stake

The issue goes out at seven tomorrow morning to twenty-one thousand readers. Two numbers in his paragraph came from your email, and both are wrong. He also repeated one of them in the subscribers' chat on Tuesday, off the same email.

Mood

He is warm and already excited about the piece. He reads the paragraph out loud with a little pride in his voice and asks whether he can get a link for his readers. Nothing in his voice suggests he is expecting bad news.

Scene Hint

Dialogue

  1. Ronan

Sam, good timing. I just finished the Echonote paragraph for tomorrow's issue — it goes out at seven in the morning, so I am locking the page tonight. I already teased it in the subscribers' chat on Tuesday, and people are asking for the link.

  2. You

Before you lock the page, I need to get ahead of it. Part of what I sent you on Tuesday was wrong.

  3. Ronan

Wrong how? I have it right here. Thirty exports a month on the free tier, and both PDF and Markdown. I put all of that in the paragraph.

  4. You

That is the version I sent you, and it is not the version on my site. Let me set the record straight: the free tier is ten exports a month, and PDF only. Markdown is a paid feature.

  5. Ronan

Ten. Not thirty. Where did the thirty come from? I said thirty in the chat on Tuesday, off your email.

  6. You

I was reading from a draft page, not the live one, so that is on me, not on you. And you do not have to smooth it over for me — I am the one who gave you the wrong number.

  7. Ronan

All right. Look, the easy fix is to cut the numbers out. I can just say it is a clean, simple tool and leave it there.

  8. You

The numbers are the part that makes people click. Let me put it in writing — the right two numbers, and one sentence you can drop in as is.

  9. Ronan

Send it. But I have to say it, the issue is basically typeset already, and I do not want to cut it close on this one.

  10. You

We are, and that is why I am not asking you to rework anything. Keep the paragraph, swap the two numbers, and cut the Markdown line. Nothing else in the piece changes.

  11. Ronan

Fine. Last thing — the chat on Tuesday. Do you want me to say the numbers changed, or just leave it?

  12. You

Go back to that thread with the right ones. Say it plainly: ten a month, PDF only. The issue itself just carries the right numbers — your readers do not need my draft page. Send me the final paragraph before you lock, and I will confirm it the same hour.

set the record straight /ˌset ðə ˈrekərd streɪt/

Our site said delivery takes two weeks, but the real time is five working days, so I called the customer to set the record straight."(我们网站上写送货要两周,实际是五个工作日,所以我打电话跟客户把话说清楚。)

get ahead of it /ɡet əˈhed əv ɪt/

The new price list starts on Monday, so I am calling our biggest client today to get ahead of it."(新价目表周一生效,所以我今天先给最大的客户打电话,赶在前面说。)

that is on me /ðæt ɪz ˈɑːn miː/

that is on me 把责任一刀切干净,紧跟着的 not on you 直接摘掉他已经在开始的自我怀疑。

记忆提示:(联想)on me 就是「记在我账上」,和结账时说的 this one is on me 是同一个 on。 注意别和 my fault 混:my fault 偏「我做错了」,that is on me 偏「后果我担」,后者更接近你要的那种干脆。

The labels went out with the wrong size on them. That is on me — I checked the file and missed it."(标签发出去时尺码是错的。

put it in writing 复习 /ˌpʊt ɪt ɪn ˈraɪtɪŋ/

代词固定在中间:put it in writing,别写成 put in writing it。

Let us put it in writing, so neither of us has to remember what we agreed on the phone."(我们把它写下来吧,免得两个人都要靠记性去回想电话里说定了什么。)

cut it close 复习 /ˌkʌt ɪt ˈkloʊs/

常用进行时:we are cutting it close。

The train gets in at nine and the meeting starts at nine fifteen, so we are cutting it close."(火车九点到,会议九点一刻开始,时间卡得挺紧。)

Before you ___, I need to ___. 在你___之前,我得先___。
Let me ___ — the right ___, and one ___ you can drop in as is.
We are ___, and that is why I am not asking you to ___.

My Turn

Situation: Same call, ten minutes later. The issue is still unpublished, so nothing there has changed. But one reader took the number from Ronan's chat message on Tuesday and put it in his own blog post this morning. That post is live now.

They say: "He is a friend of mine. Do you want to write to him, or should I?"

Your turn: Tell Ronan which of you writes to that reader, and what you want Ronan to do about the chat thread.
