Turning Down a Collaboration Offer

Today's task: Say no to a collaboration offer you actually like — clearly, kindly, and with one alternative left on the table.

The Setup

Where

A video call on a Saturday morning, your time. Dana booked thirty minutes. A slide with three bullet points is on the screen, and she is still on the first one. Her office window shows late Friday afternoon.

Who

You build your own small AI tool and make videos about AI tools, on your own. Dana Whitfield manages the community at Tidepool AI, a small overseas tool team. She has watched your videos for a year.

At stake

Tidepool wants you as their community ambassador for six months: one short post a week, one live session a month, no money — only a free Pro license and your name on their site. Your own tool launches next month, and your calendar is full until the end of November.

Mood

Dana is warm and a little nervous. She keeps saying how much the community likes your videos, and the slide is already prepared. When you slow down, she slows down too.

Scene Hint

Dialogue

  1. Dana

Thanks for making time — I know it is late where you are. Half our team watches your channel, so I have been looking forward to this call.

  2. You

That is kind of you to say. I read your email, but I wanted to hear the whole idea from you before I decide whether it is a good fit.

  3. Dana

So, here it is. We would love you to be our community ambassador for six months. One short post a week, one live session a month. In return, you get a free Pro license and your name on our site.

  4. You

Thanks for thinking of me — I mean that. But let me be up front: I am launching my own tool next month, and I am swamped until the end of November.

  5. Dana

Oh. That is soon. Could you start after your launch? We are flexible about the start date.

  6. You

It is not only the timing. Six months of weekly posts is a lot of extra work, and there is no budget on your side — so I have to turn this down. I do not want you to think I am saying no to you.

  7. Dana

No, I get it. It is just... our budget this year is really small. That is why I hoped the license would be enough.

  8. You

I understand. So let me be up front about that part too: this is not a good fit for me right now, but it is not a no forever. Down the line, something smaller could work really well.

  9. Dana

Okay. So is there any version of it that works this year? Even a small one?

  10. You

Maybe one. I cannot do a weekly series, but I can do one paid workshop in January — two hours long, and you keep the recording. If that sounds useful, send me the details and I will look at it after the launch.

  11. Dana

That could work. I would have to check with my manager. So I should tell him you turned the big one down, and come back to you in December about the workshop?

  12. You

Yes, please. And Dana — if the workshop is too expensive this year, come back to me down the line. I am swamped now, but I am not going anywhere.

turn down /tɜrn daʊn/

常搭:turn down an offer / I have to turn this down / turn it down。

We turned down the first quote — it came in at almost double our budget."(第一家报价我们拒了——差不多是预算的两倍。

swamped /swɑːmpt/

I am swamped / swamped with + 事情。

We are swamped with support tickets this week, so the blog post moves to next Monday."(我们这周工单多得做不完,所以那篇博客挪到下周一。

down the line /ˌdaʊn ðə ˈlaɪn/

We are not hiring this quarter, but send me your portfolio — something may open up down the line."(我们这季度不招人,但你作品集发我——以后可能有位置。

a good fit /ə ɡʊd fɪt/

常搭:a good fit for me / for this team / not a good fit right now。

This room is a good fit for a forty-person workshop, but not for a two-hundred-person meetup."(这个场地办四十人的工作坊正合适,两百人的聚会就不行了。

up front /ˌʌp ˈfrʌnt/

I want to be up front: the timeline you asked for is not possible at that price."(我想先说明白:你要的这个时间表,那个价格做不出来。

Thanks for thinking of me — but I have to turn this down.
Let me be up front: [
I can't do [X], but I can do [Y].

My Turn

Situation: The call is almost over. Dana thanks you, then tries one more thing. Instead of the ambassador role, she asks for a single free post about their new feature — next week, which is your launch week. Same deal: no budget.

They say: "Okay, forget the ambassador thing. But could you just do one free post about our new feature next week? It would only take you an hour."

Your turn: Answer her. Four things: thank her, say no clearly, give your real reason, and offer one alternative. Say it out loud first. (You can start with: "I appreciate you asking — and let me be up front:")
