The Setup
Where
A video call on Thursday evening. You are at your desk at home in Wuhan, a little past eleven at night; she is at her desk in Berlin, early in the afternoon. Her screen still shows the message you sent this morning: "It will be with you today."
Who
You make videos and small tools on your own. Tess is the marketing lead at Brightloom, a small scheduling app in Berlin. She hired you for a three-minute product walkthrough video for their launch. This is your first paid job for her.
At stake
The video is the main thing on her launch page, and Brightloom goes live on Tuesday. If you ask for time, you are asking her to move her week. If you send what you have, eight seconds in the middle of the video are black.
Mood
Friendly and fast. She opens with good news and is sure the video is ready. You can hear a keyboard and a paper cup being moved on her side.
